Herpes Symptoms

Genital Herpes is most commonly caused by the herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2), but can also be caused by the herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1). Since most people display no symptoms of HSV-2, the only sure way to know if you are infected is to get tested.

For people who do display symptoms, they can expect the following:

  • An initial outbreak of sores or blisters around the genitals or rectum within two weeks of infection. This outbreak may last for one to two weeks before healing.
  • High fever and other flu like symptoms, such as swollen glands
  • A second outbreak of sores soon after

It’s important to note that most people do not show symptoms and that, even during asymptomatic periods (where no sores are visible), the virus can still be transmitted to another person. Therefore regular testing for sexually active individuals along with safe sexual habits are the best ways to help prevent contraction of the disease.
